One tile, two tools. Split cuts a PDF into several files. Merge assembles several files into one PDF. Both prepare your documents for the other workflows, which work best with one document per file.

| What Moby does | Finds where each document starts in a PDF that bundles several, and writes one file per document. Or cuts exactly where you say | Assembles the files into one PDF, in the order you set. Images become pages. No AI is involved |
| Use it when | A bundle arrives as one PDF: all the invoices of the month, a scanned folder | One document arrived in pieces: scans page by page, phone photos, a contract and its amendments |
| You need | One or more PDFs | At least two files, PDF or image |
| Limits | 200 PDFs per run, 200 pages per PDF | 200 files, 200 pages in the merged PDF, 200 MB in total |
Open the tile Organize PDFs in the Workflows tab, then choose Split or Merge with the switch at the top of the card. The shortcuts open the card on the right tool.
Split a PDF
- Step 1/2. Choose the PDFs to split, then Next. Files that are not PDFs are left out.
- Step 2/2. Say what you want, or leave the field empty and let Moby find the documents.
- Click the Split button, which shows the number of PDFs. While it runs, the card repeats what it understood, for example "Understood: pages 3–8, 12 → 2 documents".
- When the card says Split complete, the new PDFs are in the Documents panel.
What you can ask
| You type | Moby does |
|---|
| Nothing | Finds the documents in the PDF and writes one file per document |
| Page numbers: "1-4, 5-8", "Pages 3 to 8 and 12", "the last 3 pages" | Writes one file per page range you name, and nothing else. The card then says Pages extracted |
| The same, ending with "in one file" | Writes those pages together, as one file |
| The same, ending with "and keep the rest" | Also writes the pages you did not name, as one more file |
| A fixed size: "Every 2 pages" | Cuts a new file every two pages |
| A description: "One document per PDF", "One file per invoice", "Separate the contracts from their annexes" | Finds the documents with your instruction as a guide |
The instruction is free text, in English or in French, up to 2,000 characters. The examples under the field fill it in one click. A list of page numbers and a fixed size are applied as written, without AI.
Where the new files go
| |
|---|
| Folder | A folder named after the source file, followed by "- splits", next to the source in the Documents panel |
| Source file | Kept as it is |
| Selection | The new files replace the source in your document selection, ready for the next workflow |
Merge files into one PDF
- Step 1/2. Choose the files to merge, at least two, then Next. Accepted: PDF, PNG, JPG, JPEG, HEIC and AVIF.
- Step 2/2. Put the files in order with Move up and Move down. They start sorted by name, "scan 2" before "scan 10".
- Check the File name Moby suggests, or type your own.
- Click the Merge button, which shows the number of files. When the card says Merge complete, the PDF is in the Documents panel.
Where the merged file goes
| |
|---|
| Folder | The folder of the first file in the list |
| Source files | Kept as they are |
| Selection | The merged PDF replaces the source files in your document selection |
Watch out
- A PDF of more than 200 pages is refused by Split. Cut it into parts of 200 pages or fewer before adding it to Moby.
- A merge that would exceed 200 pages or 200 MB is refused. Merge fewer files at a time.
- After a split, check the result when the boundaries matter: open a few of the new files in the Preview.
